Adelaide Crows defeat GWS Giants in AFLW | Ralph-Lauren

Three goals to Danielle Ponter and a star turn by Ebony Marinoff have propelled Adelaide to a commanding 47-point win AFLW over Greater Western Sydney at Blacktown International Sportspark.

The sides emerged from a period of isolation due to Perth’s coronavirus scare, but the Crows quickly found their rhythm on Sunday to score a 9.8 (62) to 2.3 (15) win behind closed doors.

Marinoff gathered 24 possessions in her first game against the Giants since her contentious three-match ban, that was overturned on appeal, for an incident that left Brid Stack with a broken neck.

Anne Hatchard (23 possessions, one goal) and Erin Phillips (19 possessions, one goal) were also important for the Crows, who improved to a 2-0 season record.

Ponter kicked the Crows’ first goal of the day from a set shot and there were early warning signs for the Giants when Madison Newman and Eloise Jones goaled to open up a 19-point lead.

GWS were down by 13 points at the first break after Haneen Zreika split the middle from close range, but it would be the home side’s only major for the half.

The Giants created enough scoring opportunities in a bright start to the second term, but couldn’t finish their good work in front of goal.

Adelaide duly made them pay, with Ponter the star in attack with another two goals, her third coming after a superb fend-off in traffic.

The margin was 25 points at halftime and neither side was able to find the goals in a third-quarter stalemate that ended with the Crows up by 27 points.

Adelaide’s Allish Considine left the game soon after halftime after she was left dazed by a dangerous Tarni Evans tackle that will come in for match review scrutiny.

Despite being a player down, the Crows finished the far superior side, Hatchard and Phillips hitting the scoreboard as the visitors piled on four successive goals.

Alyce Parker, the Giants’ best player with 27 touches, kicked her side’s second goal seconds before the final siren, but it was little consolation for a team that slipped to an 0-2 record.
