Liverpool defender Joel Matip has been ruled out for the rest of the season because of an ankle ligament injury, the Premier League champions said.
Matip, 29, suffered the injury in the first half of last week’s win at Tottenham Hotspur and manager Juergen Klopp confirmed the diagnosis.
“Unfortunately, we found out now after everybody looked at it that Joel will be out for the rest of the season,” Klopp told Liverpool’s website.
“But he will be ready for the start of the next pre-season and finally everything will be sorted.”
Matip’s injury is another blow to Liverpool’s defence, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez already out with long-term injuries.
“We will wait for him. He has now the rest of this season, then the summer, then the pre-season to get ready again and he will be ready again,” Klopp said of Matip.
Liverpool have acted swiftly to bolster their defensive stocks by snaring two players on transfer deadline day, with Ben Davies signing from Championship side Preston North End and Turkey’s Ozan Kabak joining on loan from Schalke until the end of the season.
