Fremantle and West Coast’s round one rookie list roughies: Docker Josh Treacy and Eagle Zane Trew | Ralph Lauren

Must Read

The start of the AFL season is fast approaching and both West Coast and Fremantle appear to have struck gold in last year’s rookie draft, with a youngster at both clubs pushing for round one selection.

On the first Duff and Quarters episode of 2021, Chief footy writer at The West Australian Mark Duffield and The Sunday Times’ sports editor Glen Quartermain believed they’ve identified a couple of stand-out first year players in Fremantle’s Josh Treacy and the Eagles’ Zane Trew.

Freo’s number seven rookie selection, Josh Treacy, is believed to have exceeded expectations down in Cockburn and could now be in the box-seat for an early debut.

The 194 cm key forward from Bendigo could potentially line up alongside another Freo rookie-list success story, Matt Taberner, come round one against Melbourne.

“My ‘watch this space’ player at Fremantle this preseason is Josh Treacy,” Duffield said.

“If Fremantle was picking a team for round one this weekend, I’m tipping that Josh Treacy would be in that team. So he’s certainly one that surprised them a bit.”

“Fyfe forward, Treacy maybe bobbing up and Taberner (hamstring) probably a week away but I think they’re hoping of putting together a very solid forward line the Dockers.”

West Coast’s prospecting could be even better than their cross-town rivals with number 20 pick in the rookie draft, Zane Trew, prominent in open trainings so far this preseason.

The Eagles may have club great Peter Sumich to thank for the bargain pick-up falling their way, after the former West Coast forward’s disparaging comments about Trew saw the Swan Districts’ product tumble out of a potential top-20 selection and into the arms of coach Adam Simpson.

“The bloke that impressed me at their training the other day was Zane Trew,” Duffield continued.

“I think the Eagles have got a bargain here. Peter Summich gave Trew a clip and he dropped from a top 20 draft fancy into the rookie draft.

“Whether he realised he needs to sharpen up or whether Suma was a bit wide of the mark, there are some suggestions that Sumich was a bit hard because Trew was in a weak colts team and he was clearly their benchmark midfielder and therefore was getting attention from opposition midfields.

“Three times in match simulation the other day, he came out of the middle and forwards were plucking the ball off their eyebrows.

“He’s a beautiful kick, he’s a well balanced player and I think there’s a lot there for West Coast to work with.”
