Liverpool have bolstered their defence with the signing of Preston defender Ben Davies on what has been a quiet transfer deadline in England.

The Reds have been so short of fit centre-backs that captain Jordan Henderson has been deployed there in recent weeks but Davies emerged as a surprise signing from the Championship side to reinforce their ranks.

It is understood the 25-year-old was undergoing a medical on Monday before signing for an initial PS500,000 ($A898,366).

Liverpool were also seeking to seal a loan deal for Bundesliga side Schalke’s Ozan Kabak.

With just a few hours left on a ‘d day’ when clubs seemed to be moving cautiously with finances impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, business was unsurprisingly quieter than usual.

Among the more notable deals was Premier League West Brom’s loan signing of Okay Yokuslu, from Spanish club Celta Vigo, while the Baggies were also reportedly sealing the signature of Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

There will be no incomings to boost Manchester United’s Premier League title bid but their teenager Teden Mengi will spend the rest of the season playing under Wayne Rooney at Derby.

Glenn Murray is looking forward to working with former Brighton boss Chris Hughton again after he completed a permanent move to Nottingham Forest.

West Ham’s New Zealand defender Winston Reid has joined Brentford on loan until the end of the season.

Galatasaray have completed the signing of United States defender DeAndre Yedlin from Newcastle.

Championship side Birmingham have completed the permanent signing of teenage forward Keyendrah Simmonds from Manchester City.
