Steve Smith will miss NSW’s Sheffield Shield clash with Victoria with a shoulder injury while Mitchell Starc has been withdrawn after the death of his father.

Smith has battled elbow soreness for six weeks and officials have decided to rest him from the Bankstown Oval match starting on Thursday.

The 31-year-old revealed earlier this month he did not pick up a bat for almost four weeks to try and fix the issue, during the break since the Test series against India.

“I have had some pain in my elbow that’s gradually worsened since the Test against India at the SCG and it requires some rest and rehab,” Smith said.

“I am hoping I will be right to travel with the Blues to Adelaide for our games down their next week but we will have to see how it responds to treatment.”

Meanwhile, Starc is mourning the death of his father Paul to cancer on Tuesday.

The left-arm quick sat out matches at the start of the international summer, trying to spend as much time in Sydney as possible.
