Under-pressure Albanese insists he’s safe | Ralph-Lauren

Under-pressure Labor leader Anthony Albanese continues to fend off questions about his position ahead of the new parliamentary year.

The latest Newspoll has Labor tied with the coalition on a two-party preferred basis, but more people are dissatisfied with Mr Albanese’s personal performance than are satisfied.

And his larger-than-expected frontbench reshuffle has done little to stop internal rumblings about whether Labor can win the next election.

Mr Albanese said politicians talking about themselves was never good for a political parties, but his position as Labor leader was safe.

“The caucus has learned its lesson. We know what occurs when we’re focused on ourselves,” he told ABC radio on Monday.

“I’m just focused on making sure that we have the best platform – the best menu, if you like – that we will be taking to the Australian people at the next election.”

Mr Albanese said his election strategy was always to “kick with the wind in the last quarter”.

“That will begin with the budget that will come down in May,” he said.

“You’ll see more policy roll out from Labor, as I promised and committed to do.”

The opposition leader is expected to announce an industrial relations policy in the next fortnight.
