Audi has introduced a refreshed line-up of its Q2 small SUV, including the SQ2 performance variant, starting at $42,990.

It’s the biggest update it has had since arriving in 2017.

As a style-focussed vehicle, designers have taken the Q2’s polygon motif and expanded it to the back end, with the bumper having an integrated angular diffuser insert with large pentagons on both sides.

The front end has been reworked slightly, while 18-inch wheels are now standard.

The entry level 35 TFSI has risen around $1000 in price but has a big update under the bonnet, now armed with a brand new 1.5-litre turbo petrol four pot engine.

The new mill sends 110kW and 250Nm to the front wheels, while cylinder deactivation helps reduce claimed combined fuel use to 5.2L/100km.

Its features list includes LED headlights, leather-appointed seats and steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, digital driver display, wireless phone charging and more.

Standard safety gear includes autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, side assist, cruise control, parking system plus with sensors and rear camera, tyre pressure indicators and six airbags.

An extra $7000 buys entry to the 40 TFSI, which has a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine powering all four wheels, allowing it to do the 0-100km/h sprint in 6.5 seconds — 2.1 seconds quicker than the 35 TFSI.

It also gets a new Audi Sport 18-inch alloy wheel design, Audi drive select, electric tailgate, sport front seats, auto-dimming interior mirror and aluminium interior accents.

Style and Premium packages are available and offer extras such as 19-inch wheels, Matrix LED headlights with dynamic indicators, Audi virtual cockpit, extended black exterior styling package, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, active lane assist, 180W sound system and more.

At the top of the tree is the SQ2, coming in at $64,400 but armed with a potent 221kW/400Nm engine.

It’s almost identical output to the Mercedes-AMG GLA 35, which costs a far heftier $82,935 plus on roads.

The SQ2 will do 0100km/h in 4.9 seconds and has an S sport suspension and progressive steering for better handling.

It differentiates itself with distinctive 19-inch alloy wheels, red brake calipers and quad tailpipes, while the interior scores Nappa leather seats with diamond stitching, contrasting seat colours, 12.3-inch Audi virtual cockpit with S-specific display and 705W Bang & Olufsen premium sound system.
