Volkswagen has announced its Arteon passenger car flagship will return to Australia in the latter months of this year — complete with a new Shooting Brake wagon option and a new entry level variant.
Previously available only in a single 206TSI R-Line spec, the new two-variant range now kicks off with the 140TSI Elegance at $59,990 — some $5500 less than the previous iteration.
There is a reason for price drop: its 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine produces 140kW and 320Nm, compared to the R-Line’s 206kW/350Nm.
However, Volkswagen points out the 140TSI has more gear than the old variant, including wireless app-connect, digital radio, ventilated seats, Harmon Kardon sound system and a new steering wheel with touch controls.
The R-Line has wisen $1500 to $66,990, but on top of the stronger engine also gets all-wheel-drive, 20-inch alloys with matching full size alloy spare, sports seats with integrated headrests and R-Line Carbon Nappa leather appointed trim, heated front seats — the driver gets massage function — and R-Line specific exterior trims.
Both variants can be had as a Shooting Brake for at a $2000 premium.
On paper, the wagon’s 565-1632 litres of cargo space doesn’t appear much better than the liftback (just 3-75 litres more), however the measurement used only takes in the space up to the window line.
Oddly, the liftback gets digital, FM and AM radio but the Shooting Brake misses out on the AM band.
Unfortunately the high-performance Arteon R won’t be coming to our shores.
The only option available on either body is a $2000 panoramic sunroof, while the only colour to cost extra is the $800 Oryx White Pearlescent.
