Julian Assange’s partner Stella Moris has urged US President Donald Trump to announce a “last minute” pardon for the incarcerated WikiLeaks founder.
In a video posted to Twitter, Moris said Trump could still “do the right thing” despite having already left the White House for the last time.
“Mr President, Julian is in prison right now, he could die there. This may be his only chance,” she said.
In her plea, she made reference to former president Barack Obama’s decision to pardon whistle-blower Chelsea Manning before he left office.
“How can it be that the publisher is not pardoned when the whistleblower is?” Moris said.
Assange is currently in prison in southeast England.
Earlier this month, Judge Vanessa Baraitser ruled he should not be extradited due to concerns about his health.
But she denied him bail, saying she believed he was a flight risk.
Assange is awaiting the result of an appeal in the High Court over whether or not he should be sent to the US.
He has been accused of conspiring with Manning to leak a trove of classified material in 2010.
A total of 18 charges have been lodged by the US and if found guilty, Assange could be jailed for 175 years.
