Actor Dan Wyllie had yoghurt on his face and flax seeds in his eyes when he pushed his director wife Shannon Murphy and pinned her against a wall of their home, a Sydney court has heard.

But a magistrate has dismissed assault charges against the 50-year-old after hearing he’d acted in self-defence when Ms Murphy poured her dessert on him.

Wyllie, known for parts in TV series Underbelly and Love My Way and film Muriel’s Wedding, had faced a three-day hearing after pleading not guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and a backup charge over the March 2020 incident.

A blanket non-publication order over the hearing was varied on Tuesday afternoon to include only the evidence and statements of Ms Murphy, a two-time Killing Eve director.

The court had heard allegations that each person was abusing the other over the course of their 12-year relationship and six-year marriage.

Wyllie was in the spare bedroom of the now-separated couple’s Woollahra home when his 38-year-old wife walked in and slowly poured yoghurt on him, the court heard.

Footage the actor shot on his phone shortly afterwards showed his face and chest covered in flax-seed-filled yoghurt.

“Now I have to clean this up because she won’t clean it up,” Wyllie says in the video.

“She says I’m abusing her and here I am covered in this s***.”

Wyllie’s barrister Peggy Dwyer had told the court her client acted “very calmly“ and asked for help to clean up the bed.

Things escalated later as Wyllie washed himself in the bathroom, with the police and Wyllie disagreeing about exact details of the fracas.

Magistrate Greg Elk dismissed both charges on Tuesday and ordered the prosecution cover Wyllie’s legal costs.

Wyllie has played supporting roles in films and TV over the past three decades including Romper Stomper, Love My Way, No Activity and recent reboots of Seachange and Puberty Blues.

Ms Murphy’s directing credits include episodes of Rake, Killing Eve, Offspring and SBS boxing mini-series On the Ropes.
