This will take some beating as the most cringeworthy press conference moment of 2021.
Rising Italian tennis star Matteo Berrettini was likely already feeling bad enough yesterday after withdrawing from the Australian Open due to injury.
Berrettini didn’t take to the court against Stefanos Tsitsipas, with an abdominal issue ruling him out.
So the last thing he needed when fronting the media to discuss the disappointing result was this opening question.
“So, Matteo, to start off with, can you talk us through your match and how you were feeling on the court today?” the reporter asked.
Thankfully, Berrettini met the query with a laugh before explaining that he had not in fact stepped onto the court.
“I pulled out. I have a problem with my abs,” Berrettini said.
“I spoke to the doctors and they said it can get worse, so obviously I’m not 100 per cent.
“With my team, I decided to not play because it’s not worth the risk on this big stage.”
It came after Rafael Nadal had been the one to effectively break the news of Berrettini’s withdrawal at a press conference of his own.
Nadal began discussing what he needed to do against Tsitsipas before realising the news of Berrettini’s exit had not yet come to light.
“I need to make another step forward against Tsitsipas,” Nadal said.
“Is it official? He’ll play tonight… OK. Well, I don’t know, maybe.
“I think I heard that Berrettini was a little bit injured but not official at all.”
