Tennis Australia are being blasted on social media for the pre-match entertainment to tonight’s Australian Open men’s final.
As World no.1 Novak Djokovic and Russian Daniil Medvedev were preparing to do battle, the Australian cast from the Tony Award winning musical play Come From Away hit the court to perform ‘Welcome to the Rock’ to entertain the fans.
The almost four-minute rendition seemed odd as the actors danced on chairs and played various musical instruments as the entire Rod Laver Arena went dark.
Fans were quick to jump on social media to pan the visual, which left many confused and some calling for Meatloaf, who famously put in a bad performance before an AFL grand final, and Shannon Noll to return.
Some called it “embarrassingly dumb” and an “irrelevant choice”, while others just thought it was random.
Things only got worse when Australian singer-songwriter Gordi made a big blunder during her rendition of the national anthem.
Instead of singing the new lyrics of “For we are one and free”, the 28-year-old sang “For we are young and free”, which were put on the shelve earlier this year.
Gordi was not only panned for singing the wrong lyrics, but some criticised the performance, with one person saying it “sounded like a deaf seal”.
One Twitter user said “I cannot hear anymore after I ripped my ears off my head from that rendition”.
