Victoria Azarenka has pulled out of the Bad Homburg Open following her gruelling three-set win over Alize Cornet in the second round on a day when the quarter-finals of the German grass-court event fell foul of the rain.

The last-eight matches and semifinals will now be played on Friday after no play was possible on Thursday.

Second seed Azarenka withdrew for unspecified reasons, which gave seventh-seeded Sara Sorribes Tormo a walkover into the semi-finals where she’ll play Laura Siegemund or Katerina Siniakova.

Azarenka’s second-round win over Cornet lasted nearly three hours on Wednesday.

Top seed Petra Kvitova is to play Nadia Podoroska and Angelique Kerber faces Amanda Anisimova, with the winners to meet in the semis.
