Best super blood moon photos from around the world

Must Read

The super blood moon has been lighting up the night sky around the world, with some amazing photos being shared.

May’s full moon, known as the blood moon, went into a total lunar eclipse and looked reddish from certain locations around the world – including Australia – on Wednesday night.

The total lunar eclipse was also visible from certain parts of the world including numerous US states, New Zealand, western South America and Southeast Asia.

While Australians have been calling it the blood moon, it’s also nicknamed the flower moon as that’s the traditional name for May’s full moon due to it’s appearance around spring.

Not only is it nicknamed a flower moon and a blood moon but it will also be a super moon.

The moon was the closest super moon of the year. However a total lunar eclipse doesn’t mean the moon disappears completely but it does mean the Moon turns a slightly reddish-orange colour.

The colour lasted for 14 minutes and 30 seconds for some viewers on May 26.

When will the next total lunar eclipse happen?

Another total lunar eclipse will not happen for another year.

A near-total eclipse will come between November 18 and November 19, Diana Hannikainen, observing editor at Sky & Telescope, told NPR.

“Technically, the November event will be partial, but only the thinnest sliver of the moon’s disk will remain outside the umbra, so for all intents and purposes it’ll be very much like a total eclipse,” she said.

How common is a total lunar eclipse?

In the past decade, there have been 10 total lunar eclipses.

While the super moon was visible all over the world, the lunar eclipse took place only over a 15-minute period and was more visible in certain regions of the world than others.

The US West Coast and Australia were among the places where there was the best views.

Who discovered the super moon?

It wasn’t until 1979 that Richard Nolle first defined the super moon, which is now a widely used term.

The astrologer explained that the phenomenon is “a new or full moon which occurs with the moon at or near (within 90 per cent of) its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit”.

Based on Nolle’s theory, the moon would have to be around 364,000km away from the Earth to be considered “super”.

Because of its relatively proximity to the Earth, the celestial body’s surface appears a lot bigger when a super moon occurs.

Will there be more super moons in 2021?

The last super moon of 2021 will occur on June 24 and will be a super strawberry moon.

Full moons occur when the moon is on the opposite side of Earth to the sun.

This results in the lunar surface being fully illuminated.

Super moons are said to appear 14 per cent bigger and 30 per cent brighter than usual.

What is the opposite of a super moon?

A super moon happens when a full moon reaches the perigee, which is the point in the orbit of the moon when it’s closest to the Earth.

The opposite of the perigee is the apogee and when the moon reaches this point it will look much smaller than usual.
