Up to 38 people face fines of over $5000 in the Northern Territory for potential breaches of self-isolation directions since a declaration of the Greater Melbourne area as a coronavirus hotspot.

A 31-year-old man has been issued a $5056 fine after he was not found in his nominated place of isolation on Sunday afer arriving from Melbourne on Thursday, NT Police said in a statement on Monday.

A 20-year-old woman who arrived on the same day was also fined over the weekend.

Officials have conducted 270 compliance checks since Friday.

Incident Controller Acting Commander Scott Pollock said that over the weekend officials were unable to immediately contact 38 people who were supposed to be in self-isolation.

They were under investigation and further infringements would be issued.

“The Chief Health Officer Directions are not issued lightly. They are made with the safety of both Territorians and travellers in mind,” he said.

“If you are under a direction to self-isolate, compliance officers will come knocking at your door. You will be fined if you are found in breach of the direction.”
