Amin Younes has reinvigorated the Bundesliga title race by leading Eintracht Frankfurt to a 2-1 win over leaders Bayern Munich as the champions suffered their first defeat since winning the world club title in Qatar.

Bayern’s defeat means that second-placed RB Leipzig can now cut their lead to just two points with a win at Hertha Berlin on Sunday.

Younes was involved in the build up for Daichi Kamada’s opener in the 12th minute and he scored what proved to be the winner in the 31st as Frankfurt maintained their outstanding start to the year with an eighth win from nine games in 2021.

Younes, who tormented Bayern’s defence in the first half, marked his goal by holding up a commemorative shirt with the image of Fatih Saracoglu, one of nine people with immigrant backgrounds killed in a gunman’s rampage in the nearby town of Hanau last year.

Robert Lewandowski pulled one back for Bayern to take his season tally to a league-leading 26 goals, but missed out on a late equaliser when Lucas Hernandez’s cross sailed just over his head at the far post in injury time.

“We didn’t get well into the game. Eintracht played with a lot of pace,” said Bayern manager Hansi Flick.

“If we had played the way we did in the second half for 90 minutes, the winners would be different. We had turbulent few weeks. We’re just human. But I’m still proud of the team,” he added.

In the day’s late game, Borussia Dortmund got back on the victory trail, emphatically winning the Ruhr derby clash 4-0 at their ailing big rivals Schalke, with Erling Haaland scoring twice.

Trying to return to the Champions League qualification zone, Dortmund took the lead with two goals within three minutes shortly before the break, Jadon Sancho scoring the opener and Haaland volleying in a stunner.

Raphael Guerreiro and Haaland again struck after the break as Dortmund picked up just their second win in seven league games. They remain sixth in the table .

Elsewhere, Borussia Monchengladbach were stunned by second-last Mainz with a 2-1 defeat, Union Berlin continued a fabulous league campaign with a 1-0 triumph at Freiburg and VfB Stuttgart also beat Cologne 1-0.
