Chelsea and West Ham have both secured home wins to leapfrog champions Liverpool in the Premier League standings.

Timo Werner scored for the first time in 14 matches as Chelsea beat Newcastle United 2-0 to go fourth while West Ham coasted to a 3-0 victory over Sheffield United.

The Hammers are fifth with Liverpool now sixth.

Olivier Giroud opened the scoring for Chelsea on 31 minutes and Werner then doubled the lead eight minutes later when he tapped in from close range.

The German striker’s first league goal since November 7 meant his top-flight drought lasted exactly 1,000 minutes.

“I think for a striker it is much harder when you come into the situation and you don’t have chances,” Werner told Sky Sports.

“I had in the past a lot of chances and I missed them and also today my team brought me a lot of situations where I can score and it is important to keep going like today.

“As a striker you always want to score, the last month was not so (good) and I wasn’t happy with not scoring but at the end it is a team sport and when we win it as good, then I help the team with assists and winning penalties and now I am scoring and I am very glad I scored today.”

The Blues will face plenty of tougher top-flight tests but recently-appointed manager Tuchel has now overseen four straight league wins as they aim for a top-four finish.

“This is the target and this stays the target,” Tuchel said.

“There are a lot of teams behind us chasing us but we had a lot of points to recover when we started and it remains a big challenge.”

A penalty from Declan Rice and goals from Issa Diop and Ryan Fredericks secured West Ham a comfortable win over the Blades.

Rice opened the scoring from the spot on 41 minutes after Chris Basham fouled Jesse Lingard in the box.

Diop scored the second just before the hour mark and substitute Fredericks completed the scoring deep in stoppage time.

“Great professional job form the players tonight,” Moyes said.

“Sheffield United played well so we don’t take anything away from that we’re up against good opponents.

“But we defended well and took our chances when we got them.”

Sheffield United remain 14 points from safety.
