What’s old is new again as streaming services go up against each other to revive popular nostalgic hits.

While Netflix has found huge success with The Karate Kid spin-off Cobra Kai, Disney Plus has today released the teaser trailer for its television reboot of the 1992 hit film The Mighty Ducks.

Titled The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, the series follows on from the ice hockey focused film and is set to bring the famous tale to a new generation.

Reprising his role as Coach Gordon Bombay from the 1992 movie and its 1994 and 1996 sequels, Emilio Estevez returns to the franchise, while Lauren Graham plays Alex Morrow, who decides to build a team herself after her 12-year-old son Evan (Brady Noon) is abruptly cut from the Ducks.

Set in present-day Minnesota, the team has developed into a super competitive, powerhouse youth ice hockey team in the past 30 years, with their underdog days long behind them.

But, their desire to win seems to have gone too far, with the win-at-all-costs culture leaving kids who are not up to scratch ditched from the line-up — paving the way for a new group of underdogs to emerge.

The 60 second teaser trailer begins with Evan being told by his coach that “if you can’t be great at hockey, don’t bother”.

While he is struggling with being cut, his mum pumps him up by saying “I want you to think about all of the other kids who have been told that they are too small or too slow… they just want to get out there and play… let’s start our own team”.

But, with no rink to practice and play on, they must enlist the help of Bombay, who is living a quiet life as the owner of the Ice Palace skate rink since his retirement.

The creator, writer and executive producer of all of the original films, Steve Brill, co-created and executive produced the new series.

The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers will launch on March 26 on Disney Plus.
