After watching land in his preferred area disappear, and thinking about the future of his family, Puneet Danee decided to build a house.
His journey began in August 2018 after buying a Mount Pleasant block and dreaming of its transformation to a showstopper, with stylish and ample living spaces, strong reflection of local aesthetics and relatively maintenance-free design.
After engaging AMG Home Builders to create his largest investment, Mr Danee’s dream was brought to life in January.
Looking back on the process, Mr Danee said the journey and end product was truly satisfying, managing to meet the needs of both a financially and emotionally invested client.
Why did you decide to engage AMG Home Builders?
Having built several other homes, I have come to appreciate the unseen but fundamental qualitative factors involved in building your own home and the significant choice of builder. I had built with them previously and was extremely confident of their ability to produce my vision in terms of street appeal, cost-effectiveness, quality of finishing and workmanship, attention to detail, and design and functionality.
What is your favourite design feature of the home?
Many – starting with the entry foyer and its huge glass expanse onto a central courtyard. The custom cabinetry and ceiling around the theatre room, showing the consistent material and concept in the kitchen and entry foyer wall panelling. Not least would be the huge Velux skylights in the bathrooms, providing the natural view and light within the home. The incorporation of clean, lined and sharp face brick flowing from the outside to form internal feature walls combined with the warmth of the cabinetry is particularly appealing. But if there was one standout, then it would be the styling of the kitchen island bench. It has a huge angled square metal leg seamlessly leading through to a luxurious scullery with follow through to the laundry.
What are you most enjoying about the home now that it is built?
The light-filled warmth created by the mix of textures and interior design materials, coupled with the convenient and connected flow. This feel through the house is enhanced by the maximisation of external views through the large, well-designed windows, whilst maintaining complete privacy.
Did any challenges present themselves along the way?
None other than COVID-19, but AMG Home Builders’ hands-on, proactive approach allowed them to be adaptive and mitigate any excessive time and cost blowouts.
What advice would you give to someone deciding to embark on their own homebuilding journey?
Ascertain the builder’s internal organisation structure and process from start to finish and the chain of people involved, because the shorter the better. Take any opportunity to view existing homes built by the builder – other than displays – for consistency of finish and workmanship. Whilst it may be hard to ascertain integrity and organisational financial stability, consider the number of projects undertaken per annum.
Search for client reviews, quality of workmanship, functional and aesthetic design, and due consideration to client budgetary constraints. These are all often far more valuable qualitative factors to consider in this journey, over seemingly excessive bells and whistles portrayed by long specification lists. A lot of these items are often a given with a quality builder.
