Venus Williams has lost to Sorana Cirstea in the first round of the WTA event in Strasbourg.
Seven-time grand slam champion Williams bowed out of the French Open warm-up tournament 6-1 2-6 6-1.
Cirstea had never taken a set off the 40-year-old in three previous meetings but won their first match on her favourite surface of clay.
The American fought back to take the second but Cirstea, ranked 61st, recovered to take the decider.
Cirstea will face Shuai Zhang in round two after the Chinese overcame Japan’s Misaki Doi 7-5 6-4.
Others to advance to the second round includes top seed Bianca Andreescu, in just her second WTA-level main draw match on clay, Kazakh fourth seed Yulia Putintseva and fifth-seeded Czech Barbora Krejcikova.
