The former boyfriend of a woman shot dead in a Gold Coast home has faced court charged with manslaughter.

Christos Panagakos, 28, is accused of shooting Ivona Jovanovic in the chest at the Highland Park home in September 2019.

The alleged bikie associate appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday also charged with illegal possession of a firearm.

Police allege the pair had known each other since high school and that there was “no intent” involved in the shooting.

Ms Jovanovic, 27, was shot in the stomach at the Renfrew Drive home about 8.30pm and later died in hospital.

Police allege Ms Jovanovic had been at the Highland Park home with a small group of friends who fled after the shooting.

Acting Detective Inspector Chris Ahearn said the weapon involved in the shooting – believed to be a handgun – had been removed from the home and still had not been recovered.

“It has been a 16-month painstaking investigation … but we have been focused on bringing it to a resolution,” Det Ahearn told reporters.

He said police had spoken with Ms Jovanovic’s family who took comfort in the arrest.

“It will not bring Ivona back, it will provide the family with some comfort that we have achieved this arrest.

“The investigation has revealed we do not believe there was any intent involved in the shooting of Ivona.”

More than a year after her death, friends continue to post tributes to Ivona on social media.

Defence solicitor Michael Gatenby did not apply for bail but said it was not clear who inflicted the gunshot that killed Ms Jovanovic.

“The suggestion is the deceased woman shot herself and the accused owned the weapon,” Mr Gatenby said.

He said that allegations against Panagakos were not clear and they had been surprised by the arrest.

“A number of his associates and family members have been spoken to, so he knew this was a matter, but he has been arrested today which has been somewhat surprising.

“Mr Panagakos will contest these charges and denied any criminal responsibility.”

Panagakos was remanded in custody until February 22.
