Andre Silva’s 18th goal of the season helped extend Eintracht Frankfurt’s unbeaten Bundesliga run to 10 games with a 2-0 home win over Cologne and boosted their hopes of a maiden appearance in the Champions League.

Frankfurt dominated throughout against struggling Cologne but needed 57 minutes for Silva to break the deadlock with a deft chip over goalkeeper Timo Horn.

And Evan Ndicka glanced home a header 11 minutes from time to wrap up the victory.

In-form Frankfurt have now taken 26 points of the last 30 available to go third on goal difference as fourth-placed Wolfsburg were later held 0-0 at home by Borussia Monchengladbach.

Frankfurt and Wolfsburg have a three-point gap to Bayer Leverkusen outside the Champions League places in fifth while Gladbach stay seventh but move level on points with Dortmund in sixth, three further back.

The victory will also boost Frankfurt ahead of next weekend’s date with freshly-crowned Club World Cup winners Bayern Munich.

Champions Bayern can extend their lead at the top to seven points from RB Leipzig when they visit Arminia Bielefeld on Monday.

Frankfurt coach Adi Huetter said: “Now we have a week’s time to prepare ourselves for the best team in the world,” he said.

Wolfsburg and Gladbach largely cancelled each other out but it was the hosts who came closest in a game of few chances when defender John Anthony Brooks headed off the bar in the second half.
