Italian Infrastructure Minister Enrico Giovannini wants Friday’s stage of the Giro d’Italia to be rescheduled in respect for the victims of the fatal cable car accident in the Piedmont region.
Giovannini asked organisers on Tuesday to change the route of the 19th stage of the Giro that would originally demand climbing over Monte Mottarone, where 14 people died in the cable car accident on Sunday.
The cause of the accident remains unknown. Thirteen people died at the scene of the crash. Two injured children were flown by helicopter to a hospital in Turin, where one later died.
Giovannini also asked the organisers to have a moment during the event to “remember the people who lost their lives in the tragic accident.”
