Three Great Southern products will line up for the West Coast Eagles women’s round one team, as the 2021 AFLW competition started this week.
The Eagles will tackle the Adelaide Crows in the opening round at Mineral Resources Park at 2.10pm on Saturday afternoon.
The AFLW season is run across nine rounds.
Albany’s Sophie McDonald, Denmark’s Parris Laurie, and Pingrup’s Belinda Smith all played for the Eagles last year and have been named in the round 1 team.
Katanning’s Julie-Anne Norrish was taken by the Eagles with pick 32 in last year’s national draft but will not feature in the season opener.
The Eagles won just one game in their inaugural season last year and will take to the field under new coach Daniel Pratt this season.
Laurie was a stand-out in the ruck last season, being named ruck in the Women’s AFL team of the year.
She was also a nominee for the AFLW Players’ Association’s most valuable player award.
McDonald impressed in her first season in the competition in defence alongside rebounding defender Smith.
Norrish, a dashing defender, will be hoping to break into the Eagles line-up in her first season.
