Zlatan Ibrahimovic has netted both goals as 10-man AC Milan restored their three-point lead at the top of Serie A with a 2-0 win at lowly Cagliari.
Ibrahimovic converted a first-half penalty and doubled his tally early in the second period.
They were his first goals since his recent return from injury, taking his tally to 12 in just eight league matches – only Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo with 15 has scored more Serie A goal this season.
Milan substitute Alexis Saelemaekers was sent off after picking up two yellow cards in quick succession shortly after coming off the bench.
The Rossoneri are three points clear of second-place city rivals Inter Milan.
“We try to do our maximum in all games,” Milan coach Stefano Pioli said.
“I always ask my players to produce maximum attention and focus, today we did it and clinched a deserved win.
“In March or April we will see where we stand.”
Ibrahimovic had played the final few minutes of Milan’s previous league match in his first Serie A appearance since November 22 and also started last week’s cup match – both against Torino.
The 39-year-old Swede won and converted a penalty in the seventh minute in Sardinia after being barged over by Cagliari defender Charalampos Lykogiannis.
Ibrahimovic had missed three of his past seven spot kicks but made no mistake this time.
Davide Calabria hit the post before setting up Milan’s second, seven minutes into the second half, with a long ball over the top for Ibrahimovic to run onto and place into the bottom far corner.
The only negative note was the dismissal of Saelemaekers.
The 21-year-old Belgian was brought on in the 66th minute, booked two minutes later and shown another yellow card six minutes after that.
Cagliari have lost five in a row and sit just one spot and one point above the drop zone after the winless run in Serie A was extended to 11 games.
