Five of Perth’s budding piano stars bring the life and works of Hungarian Romantic composer Franz Liszt to the classical ambience of Government House Ballroom this month.

Their concert, one of the last under the Restart the Arts with Government House initiative before the Ballroom undergoes roof renovation, is on Saturday, February 27, at 7pm.

Organiser Hannah Th’ng said the warmth of the music and candlelight in the Ballroom would appeal to all tastes, from the curious to the connoisseur, and especially to romantic couples heading out on the town.

“Liszt, the eminent 19th-century composer and pianist, is best known for his fiery, dramatic showpieces and virtuosic piano fireworks,” Th’ng said.

“Less well-known is the side of Liszt that is tender and intimate – the lyrical poet for the piano who sought to convey his innermost feelings and experiences through the language of instrumental music.”

WA Academy of Performing Arts graduates Tommy Seah, Nicholas Williams, Jordan Proctor, Izaac Masters, and Th’ng will play a program of Liszt favourites with highlights such as the Consolations and Liebesträume (Dreams of Love), a selection from Hungarian Rhapsodies, highlights from the Year of Pilgrimage, and more.

Restart the Arts has made Government House Ballroom a safe haven for artists who have lost rehearsal or performance space during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“After an uncertain year and cancelled concerts, we are excited and grateful to have this opportunity to be back on stage to share Liszt’s visionary piano music with the people of Perth,” Th’ng said.

Pre-concert drinks start at 6pm (cash bar), with interval refreshments by caterers Comestibles.
