Manchester United have held on to top spot in the Premier League after a 0-0 draw at champions Liverpool, who failed to win for a fourth successive match.

Liverpool hadn’t gone as long without a win since 2017, but Jurgen Klopp’s team still maintained their unbeaten record at Anfield since the same year thanks to Alisson’s late saves from Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba.

The result left United still in first place, two points clear of Leicester and three ahead of Liverpool, although Manchester City could go second if they beat Crystal Palace in the day’s late match.

Earlier, Tottenham Hotspur went fourth after a 3-1 win at bottom side Sheffield United, their performance decorated by what manager Jose Mourinho called a “genius” goal from Tanguy Ndombele and a familiar quality effort from Harry Kane.

Reflecting on the goalless draw in the day’s big match at Anfield, United captain Harry Maguire sounded satisfied.

“We had two great chances and two great saves,” said Maguire.

“It was cagey but it was two good teams matching up. We found it difficult in the first half to get a rhythm to the game, the press was high.”

Thiago Alcantara’s long-range effort was well saved by United goalkeeper David De Gea in the 78th minute as Liverpool failed to score for a third successive match.

Liverpool, who fielded a makeshift defence due to injuries, stayed three points behind United, who are chasing their first title since 2013.

At Bramall Lane, Serge Aurier, Kane and Ndombele secured a straightforward victory for Spurs after David McGoldrick had given Sheffield United a flicker of hope.

The Blades remain bottom with just five points from 19 games, 11 points from safety at the halfway point in the season.

“Fantastic performance from everyone today – started really well, aggressive with our press and were clinical to go 2-0 up,” Tottenham striker Kane said.

“Even in the second half, when they scored, we didn’t panic. Tanguy scored a fantastic goal and we saw the game out well, which we haven’t done in the past few weeks.”

Ndombele’s goal was the pick of the four, flicking the ball over the goalkeeper with the outside of his foot from the corner of the penalty area.

“Tanguy’s goal was incredible, the technique he had to flick that ball back over the keeper was truly special,” Kane said.
