Mat Ryan snub a worry for Socceroos boss | Ralph Lauren

Socceroos coach Graham Arnold admits it is a worry that Mat Ryan is on the outer at English Premier League club Brighton.

The goalkeeper hasn’t played for the Seagulls since a 3-0 loss to Leicester on December 13, with coach Graham Potter indicating Ryan would be allowed to leave in January if he could find another club.

While Arnold has been in regular contact with the 28-year-old and is satisfied he is taking the situation in his stride, the fact he’s not playing regularly remains a concern.

“Maty’s the type of guy that wants to play,” Arnold told ABC’s Grandstand Football Podcast.

“Probably if he can find any other options he will speak about it. No doubt he’s got his agent working on it.

“We’ll see where that lands but it is a worrying thing because you need your goalkeeper to be playing all the time.”

Arnold has also issued a warning to youngster Daniel Arzani, who is set to make an early exit on a loan move to FC Utrecht following a lack of game time.

The 22-year-old has managed just 669 senior club minutes since his cameo roles for Australia at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and Arnold says if he leaves Holland, his next move has to be carefully considered.

“I feel he’s at the crossroads of his career,” Arnold said.

“Even when he was here in Australia, he wasn’t playing 90 minutes regularly at Melbourne City. He was coming off the bench, or he was starting and coming off.

“It’s just so important that his next move is a move where he’s going to play.”

One player who Arnold is thrilled for is midfielder Jackson Irvine, who played his first football in 10 months last weekend after signing with Scottish Premiership club Hibernian.

Irvine had been without a club since being released by English club Hull last June and Arnold said the 27-year-old had been rewarded for his patience.

“It’s great that Jacko’s going back to Scotland,” Arnold said.

“He’s got a manager that knows him and obviously Martin Boyle knows him and knows him well.

“It’s just fantastic that he’s back on the field.”
