Melbourne’s Daisy Pearce, West Coast’s Emma Swanson, Fremantle’s Gemma Houghton make 2021 AFLW predictions | Ralph Lauren

Must Read

It’s been a long 10 months without AFLW football.

But finally, after the 2020 season was cancelled without a premier, AFLW is back and 14 teams have unfinished business.

Fremantle finished last season unbeaten and on track for the club’s first AFL/AFLW flag.

But the remarkable run wasn’t enough for AFLW superstar Daisy Pearce to tip the Dockers for success in 2021.

“I think Carlton will be very, very hard to beat,” Melbourne captain Daisy Pearce said.

“I felt like they were the best team we played last year and I feel like they will only get better.”

Fremantle didn’t play either Melbourne or Carlton in last year’s run.

The competition was called off as COVID struck, with just four teams remaining in the premiership race — Fremantle, Melbourne, North Melbourne and Carlton.

Pearce said while the Blues were her tip, she was still confident her Demons could contend.

“We’re in this comp to win it, so hopefully we’re about to start that journey this weekend,” she said.

“We’ve just fallen short every year.”

Peacre wasn’t the only AFLW star to make predictions ahead of the season.

We sat down with West Coast captain Emma Swanson and Fremantle key forward Gemma Houghton to ask their predictions for the premiership, AFLW best and fairest, rising star and more.

Emma Swanson – West Coast

Premier (if not yourself): If not us, I think Fremantle will go close and I’ve heard Adelaide are a pretty good side this year.

AFLW best and fairest: Dana Hooker

Rising star: Bella Lewis

Recruit of the year: Aisling McCarthy

Biggest talking point of the season: The ‘C’ word. Fixtures already have changed and will probably change again due to COVID so it will be interesting to see how the competition adapts.

Gemma Houghton – Fremantle

Premier (if not yourself): I think there are a number of teams that have a chance. Carlton are a good side, as is North Melbourne, Melbourne and the Adelaide Crows are never far from it.

AFLW best and fairest: Kiara Bowers

Rising star: Sarah Verrier

Recruit of the year: Aisling McCarthy

Biggest talking point of the season: A lot of clubs have touched on it. It’s that unfinished business. There was no premier awarded in 2020 and I don’t think anyone saw that coming. I think there are a lot of teams out there who are ready to bring more to the table and I think “unfinished business” will be the phrase rolling off everyone’s tongue.
