America’s Miami Open plans to allow 750 fans per session when the tennis tournament begins in March.

Those matches with fans will be played on the showcase court, which seats 5000, meaning crowds there will be limited to 15 per cent of capacity because of COVID-19 restrictions.

The tournament will again be held at stadium site of NFL team the Miami Dolphins, where it moved in 2019. The event was cancelled last year due to the pandemic.

Total attendance for this year’s tournament is expected to be about 18,000, which is less than 5 per cent of the 2019 attendance total of 388,734.

The tournament, which typically attracts most of the world’s top players, runs from March 23 to April 4.

The news comes as tennis fans in Melbourne await a Victorian government decision on whether they will be allowed to attend the remaining days of the Australian Open.
