Myanmar army pledges free, fair election | Ralph-Lauren

Myanmar’s military says a free and fair election will be held and it will hand power to the winning party, after it seized control of the country citing a flawed ballot last year.

In an article on an official military website summarising a meeting of the new junta, it said commander-in-chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing had pledged to practice “the genuine discipline-flourishing multiparty democratic system” in a fair manner.

It gave no time-frame for elections, but earlier said its state of emergency would last one year.

The military seized power on Monday in a coup against the democratically elected National League for Democracy (NLD) party, led by Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi

Suu Kyi has been detained along with other senior NLD members, including Myanmar President Win Myint.

The generals made their move hours before parliament had been due to sit for the first time since the NLD’s landslide win in a November 8 election viewed as a referendum on Suu Kyi’s fledgling democratic government.
