Italy’s new Prime Minister Mario Draghi says has vowed to lead a “government of climate protection,” according to media reports published a day after his first cabinet meeting.

“Ours will be a government of climate protection,” Draghi was cited as saying by local newspapers including La Repubblica and Corriere della Sera.

His swearing-in as prime minister on Saturday was aimed at ending more than four weeks of political crisis in the coronavirus-stricken nation.

Despite a subsequent cabinet meeting, Draghi – the former head of the European Central Bank – has made no comments to the public so far.

Draghi’s comment about environmental protection being a key focus of his government have been widely interpreted as a nod to the European Union, which has promised coronavirus aid in exchange for green reforms.

The previous government of Giuseppe Conte collapsed after a falling out with a coalition ally over the use of funds from the European Union to recover from the coronavirus crisis.

Draghi has chosen 23 ministers from across the political spectrum and also including a number of key technocrats with the aim of unifying Italy in the face of dual health and economic crises.

His new government line-up, a broad coalition that will in theory give him a large majority in parliament, still needs to be approved in a vote by lawmakers.

If confirmed, Draghi’s will be the third government to lead the country since 2018.
