India legend Sunil Gavaskar has slammed an “irresponsible” Rohit Sharma for gifting his wicket to Australia at the Gabba.
Sharma saw off the new ball in promising fashion on day two of the series-deciding fourth Test, only to pick out Mitchell Starc at deep square leg late in the post-lunch session.
The well-set Sharma fell on 44, having logged scores of 26 and 52 during the drawn SCG Test.
The wicket proved all the more untimely given wet weather washed out Saturday’s entire final session, meaning Sharma could have quite easily found himself batting on day three of the final Test.
Former opener Gavaskar was furious that Sharma, aged 33 and a senior player in an incredibly inexperienced XI, did not show more restraint.
“Why? Why? Why? That’s an unbelievable shot. That’s an irresponsible shot,” Gavaskar said on Seven.
“You just hit a boundary a couple of deliveries earlier. Why would you play that shot? You’re a senior player.
“Absolutely no excuse for this shot.
“An unnecessary wicket gifted away … what a waste of a wicket. This is Test match cricket … you have to convert it into a big hundred, particularly when the opposition has 369.”
India will resume at 2-62 on day three, trailing Australia by 307 runs.
