Ons Jabeur becomes first Arab WTA winner | Ralph Lauren

Tunisian Ons Jabeur has become the first Arab woman to lift a WTA singles title with her 7-5 6-4 victory over Daria Kasatkina in the Birmingham Classic final.

It was third time lucky on Sunday for the brilliant No.2 seed Jabeur, who had lost in her two previous singles finals.

The 26-year-old had lost to Kasatkina herself at the 2018 Moscow final, and her other defeat came at the hands of Australian Astra Sharma in Charleston in April.

This time around, she finally entered the winner’s circle with an hour-and-a-half victory over No.4 seed Kasatkina to make a piece of tennis history.

“I knew I had to go for it, I had to win this title to at least breathe, and give an example,” Jabeur said at the trophy presentation.

“There’s not a lot of Tunisian or Arabic players playing, so I hope this could inspire them, and I want to see more Arabic and Tunisians playing with me on tour.”

Jabeur now has a tour-leading 28 wins this year, tied with Australia’s world No.1 Ash Barty, and will go into Wimbledon on a high.
