Real Sociedad has thrashed Cadiz 4-1 in La Liga, while Athletic Bilbao has tied 1-1 with Valencia.

Mikel Oyarzabal and Alexander Isak both hit braces for La Real, sixth on the table, although the victory was controversially influenced by the video assistant referee (VAR).

Oyarzabal opened the scoring after a penalty for a handball by Alvaro Negredo, awarded after VAR referral, while a penalty in Cadiz’s favour was overturned.

At the end of the half Cadiz defender Marcos Mauro had a yellow card for a foul on Oyarzabal upgraded to red after another VAR check.

Isak snatched two in the second half with Negredo pulling one back for Cadiz.

Cadiz president Manuel Vizcaino wrote an open letter to the Spanish FA (RFEF) after the game, asking for VAR to be improved.

“Fix VAR, for the good of football, for the good of the RFEF and for the good of everybody,” wrote Vizcaino.

Also on Sunday, Gabriel Paulista pulled Valencia level with a fine header after Hugo Guillamon’s own goal sent Athletic ahead in a mid-table draw, while Osasuna beat Eibar 2-1.
