After months of build-up, Geraldton’s sole Target will close its doors for good tonight, making room for Kmart’s entrance into the local shopping scene on June 17.

Over the last weeks, locals enjoyed massive discounts on clothing, homeware and knick-knacks, leaving the store a shell of its former jam-packed glory.

The Geraldton Guardian headed to Northgate to see how shoppers were feeling about the much-anticipated switch.

I love Kmart and am in the Kmart decorating group on Facebook,

“I have two (Kmart) gift cards to spend and want to get a present for my uncle,” said her eldest daughter Azelia Volschenk, 10.

“It’s cheaper,” said Zelmè Volschenk,8, pictured holding her sister Cherize Volschenk, 2.

Target has just started to become a bit like Kmart. It’s the same for me,

It will be a good change. Target just hasn’t been pulling a crowd lately,

A Kmart spokesperson said the store front would be closed for about three weeks while construction took place.

“It’s a very short amount of time,” said the spokeperson. “We’re transforming the store in under three weeks, so that we’re not inconveniencing shoppers with a long store closure.

“When we open our doors to the community on June 17, they will be welcomed into a bright and colourful new format store, which will be filled with great value, on-trend products that we know our customers are going to love.”
