Rising American star Sebastian Korda has overcome top seed Lorenzo Sonego to reach the quarter-finals of the Emilia-Romagna Open.

The 20-year-old, who’d begun the week with only one previous win on clay this season, surprised the Italian 6-1 7-5 in Parma on Wednesday to power into the last eight.

Korda, the son for former world No.2 Petr Korda, won the first five games of a one-sided first set before surviving a set point to edge a tight second.

Another notable upset saw third seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas, of Spain, go out at the hands of lucky loser Norbert Gombos.

Ramos-Vinolas failed to convert 10 of the 13 break points he held and went down 6-3 6-7 (4-7) 6-2.

Second seed Benoit Paire will also go no further after he was forced to retire in his match against Jaume Munar, who was leading 7-5 3-1.

Seventh seed Aljaz Bedene lost to Italian wildcard Marco Cecchinato 7-5 6-2 but fourth seed Jan-Lennard Struff and fifth seed Richard Gasquet came through in three sets against Flavio Cobolli and Pedro Martinez respectively.

There were also victories for sixth seed Tommy Paul and eighth seed Yoshihito Nishioka.
