Australian sprinter Jessica Peris has revealed she attempted suicide following an “absolutely heartbreaking” athletics scandal.

Australian sprinter Jessica Peris revealed during Wednesday evening’s episode of SAS Australia that she attempted suicide two years ago.

Six weeks out from the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Peris tested positive for a banned substance and was handed a four-year ban from competitive athletics.

The daughter of Olympic gold medallist Nova Peris was subsequently forced to withdraw from the Commonwealth Games selection trials.

Peris always vehemently denied doping, claiming there were “substantial flaws” with the test and vowed to fight the verdict.

She had also made headlines for her tumultuous relationships, abusive text messages and allegations of domestic violence.

During the Channel 7 show’s “Death By Drowning” task, Peris didn’t stay submerged underwater for the required 40 seconds, instead escaping early because she was triggered by past trauma relating to her stepdad dying in a car crash.

Later, the soldiers called her in for interrogation.

“My stepfather … he passed away in a tragic car accident in 2012,” she explained.

“That affected me, I thought my head was strong and I know I was capable of doing it, but there was just a split second image of him and mentally I crumbled.

“I just had a flashback. I’ve been through a lot of traumatic experiences in my past. I grew up in a household where there was a lot of violence.

“It’s been pretty tough living in my mum’s shadow and her footsteps, it’s a lot of pressure to carry. I wasn’t overly interested in sport growing up as a kid. Then I found a love for my own sport with athletics. I wanted to go and have a crack and pursue that, then that sort of crumbled as well.

“There was an incident, I had to withdraw from the 2018 Commonwealth Games trials due to an issue with a drug test.

“That was absolutely heartbreaking. It was all over every newspaper, every television station in the country and it was (saying) ‘Nova Peris’ daughter tests positive to banned substance’. That was hard, really hard.

“I’m still fighting for justice in that – that’s still ongoing and I guess that’s just severely impacted my mental health.

“Last thing I remember about that was being carried out of my mother’s house by paramedics to a hospital. I felt as if I had no way out.”

The soldier asked: “So were you trying to kill yourself?”

Peris responded: “I didn’t want to be here anymore. It’s definitely one of my biggest regrets in life because what if I didn’t wake up? My son wouldn’t have a mother, my mum wouldn’t have a daughter.

“But that’s what it pushed me to.”

Speaking to Woman’s Day this week, Peris confessed she was rushed to hospital in 2019 after overdosing on sleeping pills.

“I was completely broken and lost,” she said.

“I kept pushing things to the side, and putting on a brave face but ultimately I just couldn’t handle it anymore.”
