A year after the arrival of coronavirus in Sydney ruined Lunar Festival plans, the city is gearing up for the biggest celebration of the Lunar New Year outside Asia.

Free concerts, dance workshops, roving street performances, exhibitions and traditional feasts are among the attractions on offer when the festival starts on Friday.

“We were in the midst of last year’s Lunar New Year celebrations when the pandemic first hit Sydney,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore said on Tuesday.

“Almost overnight, Lunar New Year events and businesses in Chinatown and surrounds were greatly impacted.”

“This Lunar New Year we’re welcoming people back to the city centre with COVID-safe events, colourful decorations and roving performances that celebrate our multicultural community while supporting local businesses.”

The festival, which celebrates the Year of the Ox, will run from February 12 to 21.

COVID-safe measures will be in place and bookings are essential.
