Jordan Thompson has continued his encouraging form, advancing to the quarter-finals of his Australian Open warm-up event at Melbourne Park.
Sydneysider Thompson saved three break points before winning his second match point to put the full-stop on an otherwise straightforward 6-4 6-4 victory over Spain’s Mario Vilella Martinez in the Great Ocean Road Open on Friday.
The world no.52 is slated to back up in a quarter-final match later in the day.
He will meet Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro, who beat Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz 7-6 (6-3) 6-3 after moving past Australians Thomas Fancutt and Matthew Ebden in the first two rounds.
Nick Kyrgios will play old adversary Borna Coric at the Murray River Open as three of his fellow Australians also eye off spots in the last eight.
Alex Bolt will take on three-time grand slam champion Stan Wawrinka; Alexei Popyrin is up against Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov; and James Duckworth will play Frenchman Corentin Moutet.
Up to 25mm of rain is forecast in Melbourne on Friday but the wet weather has so far held off, allowing the condensed schedule to go ahead as planned.
