Scott Boland has claimed three wickets in one over to breathe life back into the Hobart Hurricanes’ BBL season before the Sydney Thunder reached 5-177 in Canberra.
After going for 14 from his first over, Boland (4-41) landed three crucial blows in his second over.
The former Australia limited-overs quick first removed the dangerous Alex Hales for 29 before claiming Usman Khawaja (27) and Oliver Davies (0).
It marked the first time in Big Bash history one bowler has removed the opponents’ top three batsmen in one over.
The wicket of Hales when he skied a ball high towards mid-wicket was especially crucial, given he has hit the most sixes in the 2020-21 competition with 18.
He and Khawaja (27) had put on 64 for the first wicket, as they took their tally when they open together past 1000 runs from 28 games.
Boland’s over threatened to derail the Thunder in the crucial clash, with only four points separating the teams despite the Sydney side sitting second and Hobart seventh.
After the Thunder were kept to 25 from the next four overs, Sam Billings survived two dropped chances to score 50 from 34 and push his team towards respectability.
Ben Cutting and Daniel Sams took over once Boland had Billings caught behind, as the Thunder took 33 from their two-over power surge late in the innings.
