Every Giants player will have the number 34 as part of their playing kit throughout the AFLW season in an ongoing tribute to Jacinda Barclay.

Barclay died at the age of 29 in her home in Western Australia last October.

The multi-talented sports star had been with the Giants since 2017, and also appeared for the Australian women’s baseball team in five World Cups.

The Giants paid tribute to Barclay at the end of their recent practice match against Adelaide.

A minute’s silence will be observed before the Giants’ season opener against Fremantle in Perth on Sunday.

And each Giants player as well as staff will also have Barclay’s No.34 as part of their apparel throughout the season.

The club says further commemorations will occur at the Giants’ first home game in Sydney or Canberra.

The Giants finished second in conference A last season, but are being tipped to finish mid-table in 2021 in a year where the conference system has been abolished.

GWS and Adelaide came together before their practice match less than a fortnight ago, in a touching tribute to their late colleague.

In the week of Barclay’s passing, Geelong men’s captain Joel Selwood led the tributes following his side’s preliminary final win over Brisbane.

“Just before we finish up I’d just like to say I think it’d been a really tragic week in footy and I’d really like to send out all of the love to those families,” he said post-match.

The AFL also paid tribute to the West Aussie at the time of her passing late last year.

“There are few words that we can express at this time, other than to convey our sadness and sincerest condolences to the Barclay family,” AFL head of women’s football Nicole Livingstone said.

“Jacinda’s loss will be taken very hard by so many people within our game across all levels.

“On behalf of the AFL, I would like to express my deepest compassion to the Barclay family, friends and colleagues.”
